What Is A Lie?
A lie is whatever is not what it professes to be ~ biblehub. It is that which is false, insincere, deceptive, and not straightforward; an illusion. Simply put, it is untruth . . . there is no lie that is of [originates from] the truth ~ 1 John 2:21.
God Cannot Lie
While it seems natural for man to lie, God cannot lie ~ Titus 1:2. God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? ~ Num. 23:19. It is impossible for God to lie ~ Heb. 6:18.
We Are Commanded To Be Truthful
Two of the several verses in the Bible that commands us to be truthful are:
- Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour ~ Exod. 20:16 (which is the ninth commandment)
- You shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another ~ Lev. 19:11.
Why Do We Lie?
I believe that it is wired in our sinful human nature to tell lies; for I know that in me (i.e. in my flesh), dwells no good thing ~ Rom. 7:18. Everyone lies . . . in one way or the other, for there is none righteous, no, not one! ~ Rom. 3:10.
The Reasons Why We Lie
Some of the factors that cause persons to lie include:
Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid ~ Gen. 18:15.
- Deceit (with the intent to put others in an unfavourable position)
Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart. ~ Jer. 14:14
- Deceit (with the intent to preserve the lives of others)
When King Saul sent men to slay David, Michal (his wife) let David down through a window: and he went, and fled, and escaped. Then Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed, and put a pillow of goats’ hair for his bolster, and covered it with a cloth. And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, He is sick. ~ 1 Sam. 19:11 – 18.
Liars [lying tongues] hate the people they hurt [afflict] ~ Prov. 26:28a.
A Few Biblical Examples Of Persons Who Lied
(A) Abraham lied to Abimelech, saying of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister”: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah ~ Gen. 20. That was the second time that Abraham told this lie; the first time he crafted the lie was in Egypt. ~ Gen. 12:10 – 20.
(B) Ananias with Sapphira his wife, lied to the apostles about the exact price they sold their possession of land for ~ Acts 5:1 – 11.

(E) Isaac, like his father Abraham, also lied to the men of Gerar about Rebekah, his wife. And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon ~ Gen. 26:6 – 11.
(F) Peter (who was a disciple of Jesus for three years) denied that he knew Jesus of Nazareth. The second time he denied with an oath; and the third time, began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man ~ Matt. 26:69 – 75.
(G) Rahab lied to the king’s men and said that she did not know the whereabouts of the two men who had come to spy out their land; But in reality, Rahab had brought the spies up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof ~ Josh. 2:1 – 7.
(H) Samson lied to Delilah on three occasions concerning the source of his great strength ~ Judg. 16:4 – 21.
What Does God Think About Lying?
God hates it when we lie; these six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, an heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren ~ Prov.6:16 – 19.
Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight ~ Prov 12:22.
Four Reasons Why We Should Not Lie
- Lying originated with the devil; he has never stood by the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks what is natural to him, for he is a liar and the father [originator] of lies and half-truths ~ John 8:44
- When we lie, we not only lie to each other, but unto God ~ Acts 5:3 – 4
- We should put away lying, and every man speak truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another [and we are all parts of the body of Christ] ~ Eph. 4:25.
- We are new creatures in Christ and should not lie one to another, seeing that we have put off the old man [self] with his deeds ~ Col 3:9
The Effects Of Lies
Most lies are usually covered up with another lie; and doing this not only adds sin upon sin, it creates a web of deceit, and causes a blot [moral blemish] on your soul and character.
Lies cause persons to err ~ Amos 2:4,
The Punishment For Lying
In the Bible we read that a false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish ~ Prov. 19:9. It also states that . . . all liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death ~ Rev. 21:8b.
There is also an Old Testament principle outlined in Leviticus chapter 6:1-7 that pertains to lying. And it would delight you to note that it demands the guilty person to make full restoration of property he/she lied about, with 20% interest.
Are you someone who desires life, loving a long life to enjoy what is good? Then keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking guile [deceit, lies, falsehood] ~ Psa. 34:12 – 13.
Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men ~ Rom. 12:17.
Choose to be truthful, for the lips of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment ~ Prov. 12:19.
