The Bible is a book that contains the Holy Scriptures, and it is the word of God. All scripture within it was given by inspiration of God ~ 2 Tim. 3:16; which means that the words were “breathed out” by God – the Holy Spirit, who is the author. The Scriptures were not written by the private interpretation of men according to their own will or desires, it was written by holy men of God who were guided by the Holy Ghost ~ 2 Pet. 1:21. All the thoughts of the writers as well as the written words and sentences were given by the Holy Ghost and they are considered to be divine truths.
The word Bible is translated from the Greek word Biblion, which means “book”. It is generally used to refer to the Holy Scriptures, and is a collection of sixty-six books.
The holy scriptures are described by the Greek word logos which means “the word of God” or the revelation of God in written form.
The Bible was written from copies of the original manuscripts or documents called autographs. These copies contained scripture written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.
The books of the Bible were written by more than 40 authors, over a period of 1,500 years from around 1450 B.C. (the time of Moses) to about 100 A.D. (following the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ).
It was written from three continents – Asia, Africa, and Europe by 40 authors from all walks of life; such as farmers, tent-makers, physician, fishermen, priests, and kings. And despite these differences in occupation and the span of years it took to write it, the Bible is an extremely cohesive and unified book.
The Bible contains different kinds of writings such as:
- The narrative of creation and human history
- The Laws of God
- The Gospel accounts of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ
- Letters (or Epistles)
The Bible is unlike the scriptures or writings of other religions as it contains over 2,000 prophecies that have already been fulfilled,
It is the first book to have ever been printed; it was printed in 1454 in Latin and then entirely in English in 1535. By 1611, normal-sized copies of the King James Bible were printed so that individuals could have their own personal Bibles.
